How the other half lives…

The authors of SBDC are kickin’ it with family in the Hamptons (NY) this weekend. Straight up East Coast style. What’s it like out here? It’s kind of like this…

Since we reside on the Left Coast, look for the West Coast retaliation video upon our return to California on Monday.

Long Awaited Legend of Aahhhs is FINALLY Released!

Back in 2009, SBDC ran a post about the status of Greg Stump’s monumental film project called the Legend of Aahhhs. The movie was slated to be released later that year. Well it’s 2012 now and apparently Stumpy has conquered legal battles, focus groups and anything else standing in his way and the film is finally done. We are not sure if/when a Tahoe premiere is in store but it can’t come soon enough. Though somewhat of a deviant and frequently misunderstood, Greg is one of the most provocative, influential and compelling ski filmmakers of all time.

Theatrical trailer for the originally anticipated release date of 2009:

Low Angle Spangle

Gold Peak

Backcountry conditions have stayed remarkably good despite wide fluctuations in temperature and wind over the past week. Harvesting powder on low angle, sheltered, north aspects has been the name of the game. It’s a relatively safe way to avoid the lingering deep slab avalanche potential while still having a blast.

Mellow Yellow...nothing to complain about here.

January 2012 In Review

January 2012 was interesting to say the least. Lots of hiking, biking, ice skating and finally a bit of skiing toward the end of the month. Making the best of an atypical winter brought us to Lake Tenaya in Yosemite. Tioga Pass had not been open this time of year in decades. Here is a look at Lake Tenaya in mid-January 2012. The end of the piece includes my solitary quality ski day of the year on January 22.

Powder Sequence from Janky Films, Boot Deep

I like the fact the Janky Films Crew don’t take themselves to seriously. However, there is nothing janky about this gorgeous powder edit from their 2011 release, Boot Deep. The storm system for later this week is predicted to start wet which is exactly what we need to get a base going from scratch. Drier snow is expected by the end of the weekend. It won’t likely be the Alta quality found in this segment but let’s hope for the best. Do yourself a favor and watch it full screen with good sound…it’s a gem!

Ride out the Drought with SNL Digital Shorts

This winter has not been great for skiing. It’s actually been about as bad as one could imagine. Some people have seen the lighter side of a dry winter by taking up hiking, mountain biking, golf, surfing, paddleboarding, ice skating, and day drinking. Many skiers, however, lost their sense of humor a while ago. That said, perhaps a sense of humor is just what we need to break on through to the other side. As weather models begin to indicate a storm train arriving next week, SBDC has dug up some SNL digital shorts to help get us down the stretch. What do they have to do with skiing? Absolutely nothing. But Andy Samberg and the gang are frickin funny so here you go and pray for snow!
